My name is Alice Loft, I am a 21 year old, student at Oxford University in the UK. I came to this school project in September 2006, intending a 2 week stint. Sadly, due to a family emergency, I have managed only one! I did manage to clock up a few hours at the school however. The children are lovely and so much fun to be around. They are mischievous of course, just like children at home, but that's all part of the fun.

Advice I would offer future volunteers is to make sure that you liase with Lawson at the school as much as possible before you arrive. It will be helpful if you have semi-decided what sort of things you will undertake to teach because then you can bring appropriate materials- eg: a globe for anything geographical, instead of my useless chalk maps! Also find out who else will be here with you. For my week, I was the only volunteer, which was OK , because the centre of Kumasi is very close. But I might have brought more books, had I known! Just briefly, things I think it would be great to bring for the kids:
o Nursery-type toys, eg: building blocks, large jigsaws etc. They have nothing!
o Arts and crafts materials, eg: paper, paint, coulor pencils
o Picture/story books, again they have none! This would be an easy activity for the younger kids.

Hope you have a wonderful time!

Love
Alice.
