About the Placement

Across Greece and its islands are islets there has been a reduction in the number of local varieties of crops being cultivated. The Institute created, in the spring of 2005, the Aegean Seed Bank with the aim to collect and preserve local seed varieties from around the Aegean as well as the propagation of these seeds under suitable conditions. Archipelagos also aims to promote the benefits of traditional and organic agricultural practices. Projects therefore relating to the seed bank may include:

1) Research into traditional agricultural farming techniques practiced by the communities within the Aegean islands.

2) Experimental application of these practices as well as organic farming practices.

3) Collection, classification and analysis of local varieties of seeds donated to the Aegean Seed Bank.

4) Experimental cultivation of seeds in order to study their morphological characteristics.

5) Collection of information and participation in conservation activities in relation to the development of environmental awareness within local communities.

The placement is open to both undergraduates and graduates.

The cost for this placement is 650 Euros per month. This covers accommodation, food, use of equipment, travelling on the research boats, etc.

Role of Volunteer

The work of the Institute, is built upon a strong and enthusiastic volunteer team. We are therefore seeking applicants that are motivated and have a strong desire to protect and conserve the natural environment. You must be conscientious and highly motivated, able to work both individually and as part of a dynamic, multi-cultural team of people from around the world. You will be working on a variety of projects related to your placement type and so must have good time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines, along with excellent organisational and self-management skills. Candidates must have a good eye for detail and have a high standard of work presentation. An in-depth knowledge and understanding of the English language and grammar system, being able to speak, read and write confidently is crucial. Previous experience relating to your placement type is essential, this can come in the form of previous practical work or the completion, or working towards the completion of a good environmental or biological degree. Most importantly you must share the same goals as us; the protection of the Greek seas and islands.

Travel Information

Due to our limited resources, we strongly advise volunteers to make their own travel plans. There are taxi cabs that go from the Samos airport to the base in Mesokambos for about 10-15 euros. If any further information is needed in regards to travel plans, please let us know.
