Placement: The Shanti Trust, Malawi

About the Placement

Our organisation, based on the northern shores of Lake Malawi, is seeking two dedicated and energetic volunteers to assist in its on-going community based projects. Volunteers should ideally have an interest or experience in educational projects, as much of the work will involve working in partnership with the local school, teaching lessons and assisting with the newly constructed library and computer centre. This position is suitable for a couple, or two individual volunteers and offers basic accommodation near the lake shore at minimal cost, as well as the opportunity to become involved with many rewarding projects.

The positions are available from February 2010, for a minimum of three months.

Role of Volunteer

Volunteers would be expected to work for approximately 5 hours per day in tandem with local teachers and Trust staff. Much of the work is aimed at improving the education and opportunities for local people as well as a specific tree conservation and planting programme. The work will, in itself be challenging but incredibly rewarding.

Travel Information

The nearest international airport is Lilongwe International, approximately five hours drive, South of The Trust’s base.
