Help with Group in Ghana

Placement number: 0186
Location:    Ghana
Preferred Languages: Twi or English
Date: Group A Starts in August every year
          Group B. All year
Minimum Period : 3 weeks
Requirements: Group A. Good general level of education
Group B. Professional qualifications as appropriate

We deal solely with one small village in the Central Region of Ghana and have two different schemes,

Group A.

the first is a short term - 3 week volunteer project, which includes week end breaks at two of the best vacation areas in Ghana.

Group B.

the second is for longer term volunteers who are either teachers or medical professionals.

Role of Volunteer

Group A.

is for those who cannot afford the time or loss of salary to undertake a long term commitment. The volunteers work as a group to run a three week summer school in the village. They run special classes in subjects they are happy doing and also run sports sessions, coaching and tournaments. It can be very tiring which is why we organise the weekend breaks away.

Group B.

Is for those teaching and medical professionals who would like to work for some time in a different environment. The minmum term is one month and can go upto twelve months if the volunteer desires it.

Cost

Group A.

You pay £295.00 through the Trust as a deposit, which covers:

1. All major journeys within the country.

2. All excursions and accommodation (As a result of volunteer feed back, this now includes 2 nights at both Anamabu Beach Resort and Paradise Resort in Busumtwe rather than one night at each),

3. All food and housekeeping expenses whilst in the village (Not previously included).

Not covered is:

1. Flight (about £650).

2. Food for week end breaks; in Accra (about £60).

3. Ghanaian Visa (£30 in 2006).

4. Travel Insurance (about £30 in 2006).

5. All vaccinations and anti malaria tablets (about £125 in 2006).

You will also need to raise a minimum of £250 from sponsors or fund raising events to support your work with the charity.

If you raise between £250 and £1000 this may be used to help finance your flight costs and other special expenses involved in taking part in the project.

Group B.

Volunteers following group B only pay for their own food however they do not get a weekend break funded if you want a similar weekend break you will need to pay for the excursion.

Travel

The volunteers will be transported from the airport to the project via mini buses.l
