Our Self-help Community Project is a non governmental, non profit, non denominational, community based project that was initiated in 2004 as a response to the overwhelming challenges faced by the community namely; HIV and AIDS, Child abuse, domestic violence, Poverty, Illiteracy, environmental degradation and unemployment. The project is located in Bumbo trading center, Bumwoni sub-county, Manafwa district near the slopes of Mt. Elgon and Kenya- Uganda boarder.
This Project is a registered non-governmental and
community based
organization in Uganda that was established in 2004 to
respond to the
problems faced by children, families and communities in the
sub counties of
Bumbo and Bumwoni in Manafwa District. These include HIV
and AIDS, poverty,
gender-based violence and environmental degradation.
These ills had weakened
and disintegrated the social support systems
leaving the orphans and other
vulnerable children subjected to different
forms of abuse.
Our Vision:
Having a community where all children at risk
have equal access to quality
care and support and their hopes and aspirations
unclouded.
Our Mission:
To empower families and communities to
provide holistic, consistent,
quality care and support to children at risk.
Our programs are child focused family and community oriented, a
strategy
designed to build strong circles of support around children at risk.
We
support the orphans and vulnerable children in the context of
their
families and communities. Our programs are geared towards strengthening
the
local traditional social support systems to enable them to take good care
of
their children. We do this through training, counseling, supporting
the
kids and women clubs, information sharing and livelihood programs.
We
strongly believe that care based on the handouts is expensive and does
not
empower an individual to become self-reliant. We seek to equip the OVC
and
their takers with the hooks to fish for themselves.
The Project
has had a profound impact on the
wider community as it plays an integral role
in providing care and support
to families and children in need. Community
participation is geared toward
sustainable development.
The volunteer will work hand in hand with the project staff to impliment the activities in line with community sensitisation, home visits, counselling, research and documentation, life skills and income generating projects. Teaching the local children can also be arranged for your placement.
We will provide you with complimentary accommodation. However food is the responsibility of the volunteer. Volunteers must pay for the costs of transport to the project however the project can organise this for you.
