The Learning Helping Living (NGO) is a community based, non-profit and nongovernmental organization recognized by the Department of Social Welfare in 1984 and Registered with the Registrar Generals Department in 1989. It has branches all over the country particularly Greater Accra Region, Northern Region, Central, Volta, Ashanti, Eastern and Brong Ahafo regions.

OBJECTIVES


Amongst its many objectives, the LHL NGO undertakes activities to:
- Promote the use of appropriate technologies in farming, aforestation, small and medium scale industries, etc. for the improvement of living conditions in the deprived communities.
- Encourage women to undertake income-generating ventures in cooperatives, through micro-finance system.
- Create awareness f the rights of children and women and provide education on governance issues.
- Ensure conservation and rational use of natural resources and renewable energy.
- Provide health education for citizenry with emphasis on malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDs.
- To educate parents on the importance of quality child education.
- To promote youth exchange and travel programme for local and foreign students
- Advocate the empowerment of women and the vulnerable
- To promote eco-tourism
- To provide facilities for the education and training of the rural children on the ICT.

Role of Volunteer


(1) Orphanage/children Home/Kindergarten


The component will involve services to the centres and children: construction of infrastructure, provision of learning and teaching materials and teaching of inmates.

(2) Basic Education


Opportunities for volunteers cover: teaching of English, Mathematics, French, Vocational skills, computer skills, arts and music. Development of teaching and learning using local materials will also be considered. Construction of classroom etc. will be undertaken occasionally depending on enough participants and requests.

(3) Environmental conservation


This component will include visits to eco-tourist centres, development of biological conservation centres, researches on biological diversity and any other innovative ideas.

(4) Gender and development


Placements for interns/volunteers interested in gender activities and related development agendas are available. Researches into gender activities are considered.

5) Governance


Interns/volunteers wishing to offer services in improving good governance in the district assembly i.e. (local government system) will be welcome. Researches/students on study-tours will be encouraged.

(6) Community Development


People interested in the construction of facilities for rural folks will be welcome.

(7) Entrepreneurial skill development


Interns/volunteers having special knowledge and skills in management, manufacturing, marketing could be attached to private sectors.

(8) Capacity Building for Voluntary Organizations


There are provisions for attachment of interns/volunteers to voluntary organizations whose capacity in project management/implementation is inadequate. People with knowledge and skills in fund raising, proposal development, etc will be welcome.

(9) Health Section


Interns/volunteers interested in undertaking projects in the health sector are being encouraged to do so during their visits/tour. Although there is no limit to activities, the following priority areas will be given attention: malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and AIDs, nutrition, reproductive health, diabetes, glaucoma and disease control and surveillance professional staff i.e. doctors, nurses and paramedical could be accepted to undertake special services in the health facilities.

(10) HIV/AIDS Outreach Officer – District Health Directorate


The mandate and objectives of the Afram Plains District Health Directorate are the following:
*Management of the whole district on health issues including hospitals, clinics/centres both public and private
*Liaise with other stakeholders as line departments, government agencies, private sector and communities etc.
*Public education and or/dissemination of information on contagious diseases and their control.
*Organize regular immunization of children in the district.
*Coordinate activities of stakeholders in health delivery services.
*Monitoring and evaluation of health projects/programmes in the district.
*Complete statistics on all aspects of diseases etc in the district.
*Prepare annual budgets and reports to the Regional Health Directorate.

(11) Microfinance Advisor – Afram Plains District Assembly


*Provide advice and support in the planning and commencement of micro credit activities, especially, with regard to selection of pilot areas and operational model implementation.
*Provide advice and support in the establishment of funds in cases where these are regarded as suitable micro credit delivery models.
*Cooperate with and support any institutions (such as NGOs), which operate micro credit funds on behalf of the project and monitor their performance and progress.
*Advice and support in the establishment of a monitoring system for the micro credit subcomponent.
*Follow-up, co-ordinate, troubleshoot and monitor implementation of the micro credit sub-component at all levels.
*Assess micro credit related training needs of county micro credit staff and villagers in project areas.
*Develop necessary training modules and/or other materials for training micro credit staff and villagers in micro credit related issues where required and provide training as appropriate, both on-the-job and classroom (in cooperation with the project manager).
*Provide advice to county micro-credit staff and villagers on the identification, design and implementation of appropriate incomegenerating/ livelihood activities in rural areas and coordinate with Project Coordinator Director's staff and technical agencies to provide training and other support where required.
*Support co-ordination with other project components, especially community development.
*Participate in project meetings and workshops as required.

(12) Others


Interns/volunteers could be considered for any innovative ideas.

Cost

We charge volunteers US$800 for 1 month and every subsequent month is $300. These charges are for accommodation only food is the responsibility of the volunteer
