Brief Presentation of Reach Out

BACKGROUND      Reach Out (REO) is a women and youth centered organization operating in the Southwest Province of Cameroon with head office in Great Soppo - Buea and field offices in Kumba, Mundemba, Bamusso, Mamfe, focal points in Limbe (within the Provincial Hospital) and Idenau.

                Created in 1996, the organization obtained its legal status in the year 2000.

VISION   Under-privileged groups are aware of their rights and have equal access and control over resources for sustainable development within a supportive policy environment.

VALUE    Reach Out stands for the voiceless through commitment, transparency and accountability in the execution of its programmes for better livelihoods.

MISSION STATEMENT   Reach Out supports under-privileged groups within the communities on health issues, wealth creation and provides capacity building and information through the use of participatory approaches and advocacy.

GOAL  Improve economic growth and better health within communities and to promote sustainable livelihood.

MAIN OBJECTIVE    Under-privileged groups are sustainably empowered economically and in the fight against HIV/AIDS in their communities.

 SCOPE

NATIONAL

Six Divisions – Fako, Meme, Ndian, Manyu, Lebialem, Kupe Muanenguba as pioneer NGO on Home Based Care and Psychosocial Assistance to HIV/AIDS infected persons, orphans and vulnerable children.

Four Divisions – Fako, Meme, Ndian, Manyu on OVC care and support

Three Divisions – Fako, Meme, Ndian, for the establishment of micro projects

Five Provinces – Nutritional counseling HIV/AIDS adapted feeding with a total of ten (10) NGOs and twenty (20) Associations of PLWHAs trained – South West, Littoral, Centre, East, North West Provinces.

Four Provinces – Coordination – OSIWA HIV/AIDS project in South West, Littoral, Centre, North West Provinces for care and support to orphans and vulnerable children / people living with HIV/AIDS.

INTERNATIONAL

Kumasi – Ghana: Capacity building enhancement to 200 women on care and support to Orphans and Vulnerable Children and People Living with HIV/AIDS.

Lagos – Nigeria: Capacity building enhancement on care and support to Orphans and Vulnerable Children and People Living with HIV/AIDS.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES

*                    Care and support to orphans and vulnerable children in Fako, Ndian, and Manyu divisions.

*                    Home based care and psychosocial assistance to HIV/AID infected persons on Buea, Limbe, Idenau (Fako)

*                    Wealth creation or establishment of micro projects in Fako, Meme, and Ndian Divisions.

*                    HIV/AIDS community mobilisation/sensitization within Idenau municipality

*                    IEC in Idenau

*                    Coordinating OSIWA HIV/AIDS activities (follow up)

*                    Coordinating Dynamique Citoyenne and Multi-Actors Concerted Programme activities in the Southwest province.

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

*                    Trained 25 Council Executives/ staff and other social key actors on Behaviour Change Communication in Idenau.

*                    Established an HIV/AIDS/STIs listening, information and Counseling Centre within Idenau council.

*                    Recently trained 200 women in Kumassi – Ghana on care and support to orphans and vulnerable children, people living with HIV/AIDS.

*                    Identified 10250 orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) in Fako, Manyu and Ndian divisions in the Southwest Province in partnership with Ministry of Social Affairs and the National AIDS Control Committee, of this number, provided care and support to 600 OVCs.

*                    Co-organized a large grass root event on women and HIV/AIDS in Limbe, which 800 women attended.

*                    Co-organized advocacy workshop on HIV/AIDS with Multi-Actors Concerted Programme (MACP) HIV/AIDS Thematic group in Bafoussam, Ebolowa, and Buea.

*                    Trained 28 Community Based Organizations to respond to the needs of OVCs.

*                    Assisted 28 CBOs to establish 28 micro projects within their communities to carter for the needs of OVCs in Kumba Central Sub division.

*                    Trained 45 communities on the participatory process for the fight against HIV/AIDS, assisted them to come up with their action plans and seen to it that they are financially assisted by the Provincial Technical Group for the Fight Against HIV/AIDS.

*                    Pioneer NGO to have conducted Home Based care and Psychosocial Assistance to HIV/AIDS infected persons/OVCs in the six divisions of the Southwest province.

*                    Provided care and support to 3925 OVCs and 250 PLWHAs in Fako, Meme, Ndian and Manyu divisions.

*                    Trained 17 Associations of PLWHAs and 11 NGOs on Nutritional Counseling for HIV/AIDS adapted feeding.

*                    Trained 120 women in four divisions of the Southwest province on Project Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation in collaboration with APWAC.

CONSTRAINTS

*                    Delay in project execution and adequate follow up of CBOs’ micro projects due to lack of own means of transport.

*                    Inadequate space and working materials due to expansion in activities renders work difficult.

*                    Limited finances to execute projects remains a major constraint.

PERSPECTIVES

*                    The provision of means of transport for project execution and supervision in hard – reach areas.

*                    Provision of care and support to at least 10,250 OVCs and 500 PLWHAs.

*                    Establish more micro projects in Fako, Meme, Ndian and Manyu to sustain the OVC care program and for poverty alleviation.

*                    Institutionalize the Half Way House Project for Skills Development for drop out from schoolgirls, older OVCs, widows and single mothers.

*                    Set-up a computer village project for the women in Ndian Division (minority groups).

*                    Set-up a women centred radio station

*                    Set-up a “ring me” project for widows, single mothers and young girls (denouncing harmful traditional practices, earning an income through phones).

*                    A Home solace/counseling on the wheel programme for HIV/AIDS infected person, OVCs and caregivers.

*                    Facilitate the creation of demonstration farms to equip women with practical skills.

*                    Improve on the Management Information System (MIS) through the acquisition of more computers and the establishment of Information, Communication Technology section for better outreach of information by staff, members and beneficiaries.

*                    Acquire a permanent site so as to take care of the present inadequate office space due to expansion in activities. 

 

Role of Volunteer


The role of the volunteer will be to work within the operational framework of the organisation.  It maybe in any of the following:

-                      Office routine work

-                      Establish a good filing system for the organisation

-                      Providing care and support to orphans and vulnerable children

-                      Conduct home based care activities to people living with HIV/AIDS

-                      Assist groups to establish micro projects

-                      Train widows groups/others on maintaining accounts, project write ups and on group dynamics

-                      Train groups on project implementation, monitoring and evaluation

-                      Assist the organisation to come up with demonstration farms on organic vegetable farming

-                      Assist the organisation to update its website

-                      Assist the organisation in resource mobilisation and fund raising

Cost

-          US$ 375 for a less than one month stay.

-          US$ 475 for a one month stay.

-          US$ 825 for a two month stay.

-          US$ 225 beyond two months stay.

The above costs include food and accommodation.

Travel

To ease reception, potential volunteers are advised to have their fights schedule for the Douala International Airport, which is closest to the project (45 – 60 minutes drive).

Reach Out staff have the responsibility to receive the volunteers at the airport.
