School Child Care Project

Placement number:
0149
Location:  Cameroon
Preferred Languages: English
Date:  15th August to 30th June
Minimum Period:  2 months

VOLUNTEERS HAVE TO BE 21 OR OVER!

The location of the project is Batoke Village, in the West Coast of the South West Province of Cameroon.

The Unique School Child Care Project is a comprehensive daily childhood care and special educational institution, created for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged rural children, {street children, orphans, poor children}. Most especially an attempt to eliminate gender disparities in Education in these villages - Batoke, Sokolo, Mukondange, Ngeme, Bobende, Idenau and the environs, with a focus on ensuring girls full and equal access to an achievement in essential life skills.

The Project is one outlined to combat rural poverty as well as give hope to helpless children.

More than 70% of children in this area come from poor homes where they cannot afford one good meal a day and consequently many suffer from hunger related diseases. Thousands of children in this area have been orphaned and left with no hope due to the ravaging effects of HIV/AIDS.

This whole picture leaves education no space in a child's life agenda, and the beginning of a vicious cycle of no education, unemployment, prostitution, crime, unwanted pregnancies, HIV/AIDS, consequently poverty etc. The fact remains that the educated is better equipped than the uneducated to grapple with the demands of the times.

The target area has no relevant sources of standard or quality educational center. Thus MBONWEH believes that this whole situation could be reversed if this project were put to operation.

Volunteer Stories

Placement 0149 - School Child Care Project - Teaching/Humanitarian

           Merit, August-September 2007
"I volunteered for only two months in August and September 2007. Although I feel this is a
very limited time period, I think I have been able to do many things, which will not only affect
me as a person, but also many Cameroonians and even more people at home in Finland,
             where I am from."
