Casa Amigos and Casa Amigas are located in the Xerém township. Xerem is roughly 45 minutes drive from Rio de Janeiro. It falls under the county Duque de Caxias, an industrial city to the east. Xerem is a small town which is at the foothills of some picturesque mountains and borders on the Tingua National Park.

Casa Amigos and Casa Amigas currently provide a home for 15 boys and 7 girls aged between 11yrs-18yrs. The majority of these teenagers previously lived at Casa do Caminho. The teenagers live in town as the school near Casa do Caminho only has classes up to the 4th grade. In both the girls' and boys' homes there is only ever one member of paid staff on duty at any time and they are responsible for all aspects of care for the teenagers and running the running of the house, because of this volunteer input at the house is very important.

Role of Volunteer

1. Give English classes to small groups.
2. Give computing classes, (typing, using programs like Word and the internet)
3. Help with homework, particularly math (and supervision, since teens may be unmotivated to do their work!)
4. Organize and supervise recreational activities (ie. sports, arts, sewing, drama)
5. Organize trips (ie. to the local waterfalls, swimming pool or on bike rides)
6. Escort teenagers on hospital visits
7. Assist in the kitchen (teenagers are responsible for cooking and cleaning but they always appreciate adult help!)

Cost

US $200 per month. This covers accommodation in a 3-bedroom house bought specifically for volunteers, as well as buying food for the teenagers and for teaching supplies or other expenses the volunteers will use while there.

Travel

Volunteers will be met at the airport by the project manager or another experienced volunteer, who will travel with them to the project.
