Casa do Caminho is an orphanage run by a non-profit organization called Communidade Rural Casa do Caminho, with an aim of providing a full-time home to shelter children on a long-term basis. Casa do Caminho is situated in the remnants of the 'Tingua Rainforest.' It is an ideal setting; children are able to get away from the violence and poverty of the favellas (shantytowns) that most of them grew up in. It is 30 minutes away from Xerem, which itself is an hour's bus ride away from the center of Rio de Janeiro.
Currently Casa do Caminho shelters 20 children (11 boys and 9 girls) between 4 and 13. Back in 2002, two other houses were opened in Xerem; one for teenage girls (8 live there now) and one for teenage boys (16 live there now). These houses have been set up to encourage independent living, but the teenagers are invited back to Casa do Caminho on weekends to spend time with the younger children.

"The experience was definitely life changing and positive.
During my stay with the kids we went on several field trips outside of
Xerem. In case you were not aware, the orphanage is situated in the middle
of a tropical rainforest."
Volunteering here is free and all volunteers are given free food and accommodation.
Volunteers will be met at the airport by the project manager or another experienced volunteer, who will travel with them to the project.
