Harka Self-Sustaining Orphanage was started in 2004 and is a registered non-government organization. It is located rurally because this is where most homeless children in Nepal live, although most orphanages are in city centers. Currently we are home to 16 children 3 to 9 years old. Two house mothers live on site. Harka's philosophy that training children in yoga can help them recover from often distressing pasts and training the children in income generation will give them tools to support themselves. Long-term plans include providing infrastructure for fish farming, animal husbandry, chicken farming, beekeeping, raising of buffalo, goats, pigs, and rabbits. Harka provides all of its children with education up to grade 12. Harka Orphanage is located 20 minutes from Chitwan National Park, famous for wildlife.
US $350 for one month, and $100 for subsequent months. This includes accommodation and food.
Volunteers will be met at the airport by the project manager or another experienced volunteer, who will travel with them to the project.
