Help Teach orphans, widows and aids/HIV victims

Foundation for Orphans, Widows and AIDS Victims (FOWAV) is a community-based organization located at Martyrs' High School that was initiated by professional teachers in 2003. Since then FOWAV has provided orphans and children from poor families with subsidized education and educational materials, as well as basic necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing. Other activities include increasing awareness about HIV/AIDS among students and the community in order to reduce transmission and the stigma attached to those with HIV/AIDs and providing counseling for those affected by HIV/AIDS. In addition, there is fundraising and the initiation of income generation to one day sustain the project. Currently a school is being built on newly purchased land, but until it is ready, school buildings are being rented. There are 19 teachers and about 500 students. Martyrs' High School is located in rural Kiboga, located about 3 hours northwest of Kampala, in the central region of Uganda.

Role of Volunteer

  1. Assist high school teachers and advising students on reading and other skills
  2. Tutor students on how to use the computer
  3. Organize sports and other activities with the students
  4. Counsel students regarding day-to-day problems
  5. Assist in monitoring and advising on project development issues
  6. Office work, including typing
  7. Assist in fundraising for money to develop and sustain the project

Cost

US $350 for the first month, $150 for the second month, $100 for the third month, and $80 for subsequent months. This covers food and accommodation.

Travel

Volunteers send their flight info. to project director John Berry before they leave. He meets them at the airport and travels with them to the project.
