We are located in the heart of a beautiful forest reserve situated in the immediate surroundings of the Saloum River Delta National Park. Superb mangrove covered creeks that constitute the specific habitat to a variety of bird species, fish, crustaceans and mammals. An old sacred grove covers half of the land property of 30 hectares. The taboos and myths surrounding the site have contributed to the preservation of a superb natural forest, one of the last remaining biological hotspot of the region. Heavily forested with a large number of plant and animal species the sacred grove is the last refuge for a small population of Red colobus (Procolobus badius temmincki), a red-listed endangered primate species threatened by the destruction of the tropical forests gallery which constitute its natural habitat.
We are designed and built as an interpretive site that provides an ideal setting for tourism, exchange projects, field studies, conferences and training events, thus connecting people with the natural environment and responsible actions to sustain it. Visitors can combine leisure and learning, understand the importance of sustainable practices and ecosystem diversity and acquire practical skills and knowledge to participate in sustainable management of biological resources of global importance. Guests are expected to uphold sustainable practices while staying with us so that fragile habitats and places of cultural importance are conserved for future generations. Centre Fagaru is today a dynamic resource centre involved in different but integrated conservation and community development initiatives being implemented on the property and in surrounding villages.
We need help around our centre, inculding:-
