Rural School

Placement number:
 0091
Location: Ghana
Preferred Languages: English
Date: October to July
Minimum Period : 3 weeks

The primary school lies in the Ashanti region in rural Ghana.  The local village is known for its friendly people, juicy mangoes, and busy Monday Market.  There are currently 150+ students there, from kindergarten to the Junior Secondary School level (grade 7).  The children range from about 3 to 19 years old, so it is common to have students of various ages and abilities in the same class.

Role of Volunteer

Volunteers teach in coordination with the local teachers, but they are often responsible for planning, teaching, assessing, and evaluating their classes on their own.  Like many schools in rural Africa, while the students are eager to learn, the school lacks most supplies and the children are used to learning through memorization.  Volunteers' smiles, motivation, commitment, and hard work bring the children a love of learning and make them feel special!

We accept all people but qualified teachers are especially welcome!

Volunteer stories

Find out what our past volunteers thought of this placement!

Kate Happell, July - August 2006
Now that we are back in London, having some time to reflect, there is no doubt that it was one of the most amazing experiences of our lives, and we hope to ensure that we take these experiences and use them in our everyday lives in the future.

Cost

The first month costs US$350 (US$250 donation) and then its US$100 for each additional month.
The fee includes food and accomodation.

Travel

Volunteers are picked up at the airport in
Accra and usually stay at a partner project overnight.  They are taken to a bus station, where they will take the bus to Kumasi.  They will be met at the bus station in Kumasi by someone from our project, who will travel with them the rest of the way.
