Safari Camp

Placement number:
0084
Location: Madagascar
Preferred Languages: French is a must - want French/English bilingual volunteers.
Date: April to October
Minimum Period : 1 month

Only a 2 hour drive from capital Tananarive, Anjozorobe,  one of the last vestiges of dense rainforest on the high plateaux, is a source of life for the population and harbours an enormous biodiversity: With its 11 species of lemurs(Indri, Propitecus Diadema, Microcebus…), 82 bird species (amongst which 43 are endemic), 423 plants (amongst 65% endemic), this forest is a dreamland for nature lovers. We greet you to our very own tented safari camp..

Anjozorobe forest corridor covers 66500ha and stretches over 80km. Only a 100km from Tana, 90km of a good tarred road and 10km of a dirt track where a four wheel drive is needed.

Lodging is a basic tented safari camp, beautifully facing the primary forest. Only 6 twin bedded tents, each with “country shower” and chemical toilets.  No electricity in the area, but petrol hurricane lamps and candles.

We encourage our visitors to discover traditional crayfish trapping or visit the local essential oil distillary, in order to support and valorise the locals’ activities. We work hand in hand with NGO Fanamby to protect environment and involve inhabitants in ecotourism. The camp has also inaugurated a school in 2005, and guests are welcome to come and encourage the pupils and ask questions to the “bush” teacher. All this efforts for sustainable tourism have been rewarded in 2005, when we won the worldwide contest DRV for ecotourism achievement.

Activities can include Madarbres tree climbing in the forest: just like the lemurs, for a day, you will be able to climb to the summit of the trees, jump from rope bridges stretched high in the air, rest in hammocks hanging high, so high!
