Country Information

We are a non-government organization based in Ghana. It is a membership based and a grass -roots organization dedicated to promoting sustainability in development. The organization links up with natives working in different areas. The organization is funded by the members and some past participants since it's inception in 1998.  Our aims is to provide education for street children, not only in the usual school subject, but also in any skills they might need in order to start living self sufficiently. We are therefore fighting to help alleviate poverty, hunger, illiteracy, Malnutrition and drug abuse, unemployment,

Our effort is to move the planet of poverty positively to sustainability in development in the field of agro-forestry, environmental conservation, cultural exchange and international solidarity friendship and peace through volunteer work. We offer socio-economic development through volunteer work programs mostly in partnership with other
Ghana based organizations, institutions, groups, members etc.

Role of Volunteer

We invite and place volunteers from different parts of the world participating in our programs in Ghana with a direct connection to volunteer opportunities that match interests, skills, and the common desire to make a difference - both in the countryside and urban areas; and they are enjoying it!. By the time they leave Ghana they been immersed in Ghanaian culture, way of life and not least, the friendly and warm spirit of the people. Today, millions of people are helping to make a difference in their neighborhoods, communities, and the nation. Volunteering is fun, a great way to meet new people and have new experiences, is looked upon favorably by schools and universities, and just makes you feel good to know you've helped make the world a better place!. Interested volunteers can also join the General tour program at their free time.

Our projects mainly evolve around educating children.
Here are details of present projects:

Teaching Street Children

In Osu alone there are currently more than 300 street children who cannot afford to attend school. This means that the area suffers greatly from illiteracy and its associated problems. There has therefore been established a school in this area to provide free basic education for these children.

You would be working alongside local volunteer teachers with children from kindergarten to junior secondary school level. The school currently has approximately 150 children who are taught in basic subjects such as Maths, English and Science. With more children arriving for classes every day, the school is in constant need of volunteers to teach, help control the class and to organize recreational activities. It is also possible to arrange excursions with the children to some of the sites near to Accra, such as the Aburi Botanical Gardens. It is also likely that during the daytime you will teach a few children privately, these are likely to be slightly older children but those who have not received any education so do not posses the basic skills of reading and writing.

Vocational Training

As with any country in the world, academic subjects are not for everybody, we are therefore working to offer vocational skills to some of the youth in order to provide them with the opportunity for a career and a future.

You would work with local skilled craftsmen to teach children technical skills, providing them with a career. We currently have projects teaching carpentry and masonry in the Western Region and plumbing, batik and shoe making in Accra.

Fee is US$700 . This includes food, accommodation and transport to the project areas for a period of  four ( 4 )  weeks.

Health Care

We offer placements in different hospitals in both urban and rural areas. Many hospitals in Ghana suffer from a shortage of doctors; at times even if the staff were available there are not sufficient funds in order to take on extra workers. Those who are coming with a medical background are also able to offer additional training to some of the hospital staff to enhance the work that is undertaken, whilst others are simply able to alleviate some of the pressures on the staff by assisting in other areas of the hospital.

Medical students, doctors and nurses can work alongside local nurses, midwives and medical and orthopedic doctors whilst those without a medical background can assist with the running of the hospital and other needs such as website design. Working days will vary depending on the hospital and the kind of work you are undertaking.

Fee is US$700 . This includes food, accommodation and transport to the project areas for a period of  four ( 4 )  weeks.

HIV/AIDS Awareness

Many of the sufferers live in rural areas without frequent access to medical care, whilst others cannot afford the medication they need. The greatest weapon we have to combat the spread of this virus is education. It is therefore important to teach people to understand the disease and how they can best protect themselves from infection.

This placement can be undertaken in both urban and rural areas. You will work with the Ghana Aids Commission and the Ministry of Health to teach awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS in local communities, villages and schools.

It is also possible to work with HIV/AIDS patients at St. Josephs Hospital, Eastern Region, where there is an outpatient scheme and it is also possible to travel to the rural areas with some of the doctors in order to visit patients.

Fee is US$700 . This includes food, accommodation and transport to the project areas for a period of  four ( 4 )  weeks.

Water Treatment

Drinking unclean water is one of the commonest causes of illness in rural areas, it is therefore important not only to help provide sources of safe clean water but also to educate the people on why this is necessary.

Working in rural areas to educate villages on the need to drink safe water and how they can treat the water from rivers and streams in order to make it suitable for drinking and cooking.

Fee is US$700 . This includes food, accommodation and transport to the project areas for a period of four ( 4 )weeks.

Sanitation

Living in unclean surroundings is another common cause for illness, however in many areas in Ghana there are problems of rubbish on the streets. This can cause the open gutters to become blocked preventing the unclean water from draining away, this results in pools of stagnant water, the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes leading to the spread of malaria.

This project would run alongside your primary placement. You will work alongside members of the local community to clear rubbish from the streets and gutters in order to create a safer and healthier environment. The clean-up exercise takes place at the weekend once a fortnight.

Fee is US$700 . This includes food, accommodation and transport to the project areas for a period offour ( 4 )weeks.

Other Placements

If you have any other skills relating to healthcare that are not covered by the placements above, then please contact us and we will try our best to find a placement to suit your skills. For example several past volunteers have worked in distributing medication to rural villages where no healthcare is available.

Community Development Work

Orphanage In Ghana

Many children end up in orphanages for several reasons. Often when both parents die, the remaining family members are not able to afford to take care of the children. In other instances after giving birth if the parents cannot afford to pay the hospital bill, they will leave before this is necessary, abandoning the child. Other children will have been left to die by their mothers, on the street or in rubbish dumps, but having been found in time have been brought to hospital and, if they survive, to the orphanage.

Working with one of our partner orphanages in either a rural or urban area. You will work to take care of the children’s needs such as preparing food, playing with them, bathing them and helping to take them to school and complete their homework. You can either choose to work in a small orphanage with around 15 children or in one of the larger orphanages where there may be up to 150 children.

Fee is US$650 . This includes food, accommodation and transport to the project areas for a period of four (4) weeks.

Building Projects

Working in rural communities and assisting with manual labour to help the development of the village by building schools, information centers, gutters and roads. As well as new buildings you will also help to improve the standard of the existing buildings.

Fee is US$650 . This includes food, accommodation and transport to the project areas for a period of four (4) weeks.

Beach Lifeguard

La Pleasure Beach Accra, is popular with tourists and locals, at weekends it attracts around two thousand visitors whilst on public holidays this number can exceed seven thousand. You would be working along side a team of local lifeguards to ensure the safety of the visitors in the sea, which can be rough and dangerous. Although the local lifeguards do an excellent job they have received no formal training, you would therefore also be able to assist with CPR and other first aid training as well as helping with their English and communication skills.

Fee is US$650 . This includes food, accommodation and transport to the project areas for a period of four (4) weeks.

Environmental Placements

Agro Forestry project

Working with community members in Pepepsu, Northern Volta Region. The chief of the area has around 150 hectares of land that is in need of maintenance and development, in a way that will enable the sustainability of the land and the forest areas on it. At the current time there is a wide variety of work in which volunteers will be able to participate, these include tree planting, pruning and weeding, clearing the land under the trees and thinning some forest area. There is also a current license to bring animals into the forest area to create a forest reserve and eco-tourist attraction, however before this can begin it will be necessary to build secure fencing around the area, a project which is currently in need of assistance. For those who wish to combine the agro-forestry work with working with children there are opportunities to work in the local school, which despite being registered with the government is still in need of books, equipment and teachers. Volunteers will be living in a rural village with a local family, with the nearest town with restaurants and shops etc a short taxi ride away.
