Venezuelan Community Development Projects

Placement number:
 0053
Location:  Venezuela
Preferred Languages: Spanish is not a must but you must want to learn Spanish.
Date: All Year
Minimum Period: 1 week

Our challenging community development projects in humanitarian, educational and environmental fields improve the living qualities of an underprivileged young generation, mostly members of local Pemon Indian communities.

Our volunteer work opportunity is a mix of community service, educational opportunities and recreational activities and the unique first hand experience
of the regions Pemon Indian culture.  Volunteers work in the stunning setting of the beautiful and diverse La Gran Sabana national park: Fast savannahs and virgin forests represent a biologic reserve where prehistoric mesas (Tepuy) are like ecological islands. This is one of the oldest geological sites on the planet known as "The land of eternal spring".

Yet more than its near perfect climate, it is the local people who are the true source of
La Gran Sabena’s beauty. Amidst its splendor and cultural riches, there is the small town of Santa Elena de Uairen that offers you a chance to give, to learn and to grow. Our volunteer projects are both beneficial to the community and rewarding to the volunteers and offer local children and young people extra recreational and learning opportunities that they would otherwise not have. We operate an attention centre which represents the only educational opportunity for numerous children with special needs in the province. Volunteers enjoy working in schools, day care centres and the hospital as well as in stunning locations in the national park, forest reserves and small Pemon Indian villages.

Most of our international volunteers have no previous experience and very little Spanish, which is never a problem, as we provide full support and 24 hour back-up from our local staff. Volunteering with us is a great opportunity to work side by side with locals, learn new skills, study Spanish, and immerse oneself in the Latin and indigenous culture. Join us and seize the chance for an unforgettable experience in and around this vibrant community. Make life-long friends, explore one of the worlds most striking landscapes and help us to make a difference in the lives of numerous families.

Unlike many volunteer programs, we are a non-profit organization, and do not work through a volunteer placement agency. Because we don't need to give any of your money to an agency or as profit for shareholders, we can keep volunteer costs to a minimum, typically half that of most agency-organized placements. Also, less of the money we do spend goes on overheads. We rely entirely on donations and volunteer contributions to finance our community service and outreach programs.

Role of Volunteer

Volunteer stories

Find out what our past volunteers thought of this placement!

Various, 2006
Well, my dears, it has been an absolute pleasure. I have no idea how to begin to reflect on this experience. I'm coming away so full of inspiration - to travel, to work, to volunteer, to learn Spanish, to sing - and I feel like this is just the beginning. I want to thank Aldeas de Paz for this.
