The hotel is surrounded by a 100 hectares (240 acres) coconut grove. Our terrain lies on a small peninsula. To the west, lies the Gulf of Mexico with breathtaking sunsets; to the east the famous "Ría de Celestún", a salt water inlet with unique flora and fauna.
On July 19th, 1979, the Federal Government decreed the Celestun a wildlife refuge. Because of its importance as the main feeding area for the American Flamingo and countless species of waterfowl and shorebirds, its status was upgraded to that of a Special Biosphere Reserve in 1989.
The Special Biosphere Reserves are representative zones of one or more ecosystems that are untouched by man. These areas are the habitat to endemic or species threatened with extinction.
Today, Mexico has 44 National Parks, 13 Special Biosphere Reserves, 16 Biosphere Reserves, 8 Protected Areas, 3 Natural Monuments and 2 Marine Parks.
As a volunteer we expect you to help us with the general running of our hotel. If you have particular skills or knowledge let us know and we can adapt your volunteer itinerary. For example, you may have ecological knowledge (tour guide), be able to teach or have first aid knowledge.
Free food and accommodation.
