Hello - I would like to hear from older people say 50+ who have been volunteering. What sort of experiences did you have?

Hi

The best person for you to speak to would be Ann chawner.  She went volunteering about 2-3 years ago and was 50+.  She is now helping a project in Uganda.

she will be more than happy to answer your queries

brightangel@ntlworld.com

i hope this helps

Hello,
I came to join the Tsunami Volunteers in Thailand. Worked for a month teaching English in a high school, went back to the UK, took early retirement and came back here. I'm still teaching but with no pay. .
63 now and no thoughts of stopping. No TV, no radio, no newspapers and no baggage
Best job I ever had
Why did I do it?   Because I could... and because of an eight year old girl in a bad group "counselling" session, with a microphone stuck under her chin, she was asked what the word tsunami meant to her she said, in the quietest voice "Mama not come home"

Choose a destination, choose a project, try it. If you like it, live it.

Ken

50+ - add 15 years to that and still enjoy!!....I travelled a lot after our children grew up then about 5 years ago went to Uganda and seem to have got stuck there.
I found an area in SW where scenery is beautiful, no other white people were helping and one young man from the village was building a tiny basic Guest House to try give employment to some of his friends. I decided to help by spending rest of my money in local hardware shop - now 4 years later we have got 6 guest bandas, built a craft centre/workshop - teaching computing & soon tailoring & other skills (as we find volunteers to help star up classes) we have a nursery school with around 50 village children attending and more. See our website Multimedia file viewing and clickable links are available for registered members only!!  You need to Login or Register!!
and please email me for more info. Volunteering is not just for Gap Years.....and if you can get the airfare together then the rest will cost you very little but you will be doing a lot...
I dont live there (have got 5 grandchildren here plus husband of 40+ years who hates travelling) - I go out for about 6 weeks at a time - a couple of times a year and keep in touch by email and phone both ways
